What is AVUN?

The Australian Ventilator Users Network Inc. is a self help disabled peoples group for people reliant on ventilatory support. AVUN was established in 1990 by a small group of ventilator users associated with Fairfield Hospital here in Melbourne, Australia. As the membership has grown so has AVUN's role which now has a strong advocacy component in supporting the individual and working systemically to develop appropriate services

Membership

AVUN is a consumer driven organization. Accordingly, to qualify for full membership a person must use a form of mechanical ventilation for life support.

Within the membership there is a great diversity in terms of;

location - metropolitan Melbourne, regional Victoria and Interstate

diagnosis - polio, motor neuron disease, muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular diseases, kyphoscoliosis, spinal cord injury etc

ventilator dependency - from nocturnal use only to 24 hour dependant

disability - some ventilator users show little sign of disability, others have little or no mobility, complex disabilities and high support needs

social circumstances - place of residence ranges from acute hospital ward to support accommodation, however most live in the community with their family or independently in a house, flat or unit. The disability support pension is a common source of income but many ventilator users work part of full time. Other ventilator users are undertaking tertiary study and/or other community activities

The link that unites this diverse group is the knowledge that each of us relies on ventilatory support to survive. However ventilatory support is also a tool which contributes significantly to our quality of life and enables us to maintain the lifestyle we choose.
